HOW TO STERILISE YOUR MENSTRUAL CUP (STOVE-FREE)

Say goodbye to awkwardly hunching over a stove to sterilise your menstrual cup.

We explain how to clean your period cup with our unique sterilising case.

The first of its kind TOM Organic Period Cup with microwavable steriliser case

Period care has evolved, and through our commitment to offering conscious period care for your health and the planet, we’ve been working on a period cup for a long time. We wanted to solve two key problems with our period cup design – inserting and removing the cup easily and providing a more convenient way to sterilise your menstrual cup.

Our Period Cup is the first cup available with its own steriliser case, so you can say goodbye to sterilising your cup on the stove. All you need is a microwave and a few mLs of water and in one minute you can have your period cup safely sanitised. Designed to be easier to use, our cup features internal ridges and unique finger grips to help you get the cup in and out easily and more intuitively. The real driver for this was removing the fear that is a huge barrier to trying cups for the first time.

THE MODERN PERIOD CUP

Using a period cup is a great solution for those who want to make their period more eco-friendly or who are keen to move away from disposable products like tampons or pads. Our Period Cup lasts up to five years and is made from 100% Medical Grade Silicone and colour pigment and is produced without any silicone offcut waste. We were really excited to make both our cups and sterilisers in Melbourne with a local manufacturer and an amazing team of industrial designers who helped us turn our ideas into reality.

We heard loud and clear that your biggest hassle was how to sanitise a menstrual cup without boiling it in a pot. Our solution? A steriliser case that comes free with every TOM Organic period cup. Made from 100% medical grade recyclable plastic, our steriliser case kills 99.9% of bacteria. It’s much simpler to use than the old stove-top boiling method – simply add a little bit of water and pop it in the microwave for 60 seconds to sanitise. The steriliser case can also act as a handy carry case if you need to store your cup while on the go or between uses.

HOW TO STERILISE A MENSTRUAL CUP IN THE MICROWAVE USING THE TOM ORGANIC CUP STERILISER:

  1. Open the steriliser lid and fill with cold water to the line on the inside rim (only a few mls)
  2. Place your cup face down in the steriliser and close the lid to the first notch so there is still a gap at the top. This is important because the steriliser needs ventilation when it’s heated.
  3. Microwave the steriliser with the cup inside for 1 minute on high (in a 1000W microwave), then leave to cool in the microwave for another minute before removing – otherwise, it may be too hot to handle.
  4. Remove the steriliser from the microwave, open the lid and drain the water. Once your cup has cooled to room temperature it’s ready to use again.

Yep, it really is that easy! More questions?
