We sat down with Founder and Creative Director Penelope Cohen to find out more about Melbourne born brand Skin and Threads.

For those of us who don’t know, what is Skin and Threads? Where was the idea hatched?

Skin and Threads is a premium lifestyle women’s clothing brand.  We love our fabrics including organic cottons and cashmere.  We see our styles as building blocks for your wardrobe, pieces that you throw on again and again because they work.

Our journey for starting Skin and Threads was a little unexpected and I never expected to ever own my own business.

After finishing university, I found myself in Mergers and Acquisitions surrounded by a lot of grey partition walls and thought there must be something more creative I can do.

I met Emma during a marketing course; we had a martini at Gin Palace, we entered a competition and won some funding which gave us the push to start!

What do you love most about the new winter collection?

Winter is my season.  I love everything about it.  Layers, textures, jackets and boots – it’s a chance to really show your style by mixing fabrics and adding accessories. My favourite pieces from the collection are the emerald green cashmere open cardigan worn with our leather tie belt and leather black legging.

Best advice for other women wanting to start a business?

Create a strong vision but remember that you cannot do it all and hire dynamic, passionate individuals that compliment your skill set.

Favourite way to move your body?

I’m a big walker and runner but I feel best after a solid pilates session.

Handbag essentials?

Phone, keys, sunglasses, lipstick/lip gloss in multi shades, dressy earrings (just in case), Skin and Threads cashmere cardi, and Tom Organic wipes – these are always handy to have.

Where can we find Skin and Threads?

We have four stores in Melbourne and two stores in Sydney.  You can also find us online www.skinandthreads.com.
